The creation of the We Run Bayview 5K was driven by our desire to broaden the spectrum of services offered to our community. Selecting the Bayview-Hunters Point area as the race venue was a deliberate choice, aimed at enhancing accessibility to resources for those we serve.

This event serves as an intentional effort to advocate for overall health and well-being within San Francisco’s underserved communities, introducing novel experiences that have traditionally been absent. Our goal is to foster connections among different groups, promote physical activity as a pillar of health, and pave the way for future events of similar nature, all while addressing critical needs within our community.

ABOUT YCD

Established in 1973, Young Community Developers (YCD) serves San Francisco’s most marginalized under-resourced residents. Our organization was established in response to the racial barriers to employment opportunities in San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point community, and continues to be a pillar in the communities we service.

Over the past 50 years, YCD has adapted to meet the increasing needs of historically marginalized communities of color, focusing on critical areas such as housing, education, and workforce development to promote equity and advancement. As we commemorate this remarkable achievement, we look to the future to seek further opportunities for growth to meet the ever-changing needs of our community.

In alignment with our goals related to expansion, we are thrilled to introduce our first ever We Run Bayview 5K race, a testament to our commitment to progress and service.

RACE VENUE

We are excited to host We Run Bayview 5K at the iconic Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, a location deeply intertwined with the legacy of one of YCD’s founders, Claude Everhart.

As the chairman of the Candlestick Point Citizens’ Advisory Committee, he played a crucial role in the construction of Candlestick State Park in the Bayview–Hunters Point area. He championed a public process that centered community input and control, transforming the Bayshore into a natural park built on landfill.

This park stands today as a testament to the power of community-driven development and the importance of preserving natural spaces for public enjoyment.
